Building a Winning Team by Knowing Your People and Letting Them Know You

If your business is struggling, is it possible that it’s because you know your financial statements better than you know your people?

If, as a therapist and former business owner, I could make just one recommendation to owners of struggling businesses it would be this; knowing your people and letting them know you is likely the best and fastest way to solve your problems. It’s difficult to build a winning team without really knowing the players and developing a strong relationship with and amongst them.

But it’s scary right? Maybe not the part of you knowing them, perhaps you already do, or think you do at least.  But letting them know you; being honest, open and vulnerable can only get you in trouble, right?

As the New Year rolls around, many of us are reflecting on the past year and considering what we want to focus on during this next trip around the sun.  As I’ve spoken with clients and thought about my own goals, the topic of holistic, well-rounded self-care has come up regularly.  Self-care is paying attention to and making good choices for your mind, body, soul, and spirit.  Without being aware of this, we risk falling into complacency, remaining stuck in unhealthy patterns, and hindering our ability to live the kind of story we want to experience.

How do I Know if I have the "Right" Therapist?

For someone who’s never been in therapy, trying to find out what makes a good therapist can feel harder than finding a good doctor. After all, who wants to go into a room and strip one’s emotional clothing, not to mention spend money, on someone who isn’t going to be able to help you feel/get better?

            While there are many things to know about counseling, here are a couple tips in deciding on a therapist:

  1. What kind of work do you want to do?

Therapists tend to hold to different points of view on therapy and sometimes specialize. For example, many therapists hold to Cognitive Behavioral Theory—which basically operates off of the idea that change comes through working out core lies, and behaviors follow your thoughts.
