“Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: It must be produced and discharged and used up in order to exist at all.”

—William Faulkner

If there was a supplement that has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression, anxiety, pain, disease, and improve mood, sleep, and immunity, would you take it? I would, I’d be looking at Costco to buy it in bulk. The good news is, this supplement does exist and doesn’t require a yearly membership or three low payments of $19.99; however it looks different than adding a packet into your morning smoothie.

Practicing gratitude daily helps override our automatic tendencies to hyper focus on problems and gain some perspective in difficult situations and seasons of life. Gratitude can also be a path we follow to find hope in difficult seasons. Practicing gratitude daily for three weeks develops positive mindset into a habit. After the initial three w ...

Control

If you are anything like me, and probably just about every other person in the world, you probably enjoy having things go your way. It is nice to see things go the way they are supposed to, to see your efforts be rewarded with a satisfying outcome, to have others understand you and think the best of you. If life always worked out this perfectly, well… I don’t know if we could call it life, but it sounds like it would be nice!

Whether we are consciously thinking about these things or not, if we take an honest look at ourselves we often operate from this way of thinking. We are motivated for things to go our way and feel good, and even when our motives seem altruistic there is almost always something we are getting from the specific outcome. It might sound like a pessimistic way of seeing things but when we boil it down, we realize that we desperately want to be in control, and we will find ways to exert our will on people ...

Thoughts About Thoughts

Thoughts About Thoughts

March 13, 2023

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) suggest that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are interconnected, and that what we think and do impacts the way we feel.  It follows that monitoring and changing thoughts where needed can change one’s life.

It’s reported that the average person has more than 6,000 thoughts per day. Becoming aware of these thoughts and thought patterns is imperative to changing behaviors and emotions. We will only feel as good as our thoughts allow us to feel.

Think of your mind as a thought machine that’s at work during all your waking hours and sometimes even when you’re in a deep sleep.

Where do thoughts originate?

What Does it Mean to Be Humble

image for blog entry

To be humble, to have humility, to have a humbling experience.  It sounds easy and we all say we strive to be this. Biblically we are called to be humble. So why is it so hard for us to admit that we should have this state of mind, let alone try and display this in our daily lives.

I was reminded of this during the week when a client came up to me and said he was going out for wrestling and asked what he needed to do to be good.  I said humility. We have a saying in this sport that “if you don’t have humility be ready to be humbled”, and this can true for everyday life’s experiences.  Maybe that is why wrestlers can handle so much adversity.

I guess the question we need to ask ourselves is what do I need to do to be humble, before I am humiliated?  Like I mentioned earlier wrestlers learn from a good butt whipping on the mat, we take that as “what not to do next time experience” and apply ...
